1. Media Life: Struggles and Challenges — Training Session at LGU

The Department of Media and Communication Studies at Lahore Garrison University organized a training session for students titled Media Life: Struggles and Challenges.

The session was held at the university's Allama Iqbal Auditorium on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

For more details, let us watch our report.

The Department of Media and Communication Studies at Lahore Garrison University organized a training session for students titled Media Life: Struggles and Challenges. The session took place at the university's Allama Iqbal Auditorium.

The main objective of the training workshop was to familiarize students of journalism and media studies with the practical aspects of the profession, the professional lives of media anchors, their daily responsibilities, and the challenges they face.

Renowned Express News anchor and podcaster Imran Sanaullah and New Pakistan anchor Hina Salman participated in the session as guest speakers.

Student: During live shows, many unexpected things can happen. What is one of the most unexpected questions you have received, and how do you handle such situations while broadcasting live?

Guest Speaker: Absolutely, these things happen. During live shows, sometimes breaking news comes in, sometimes a bomb blast occurs, and sometimes our VIPs begin delivering addresses on television. Of course, you have to cover those events as well.

Guest Speaker: The point is that being a morning show host does not simply mean being an entertainer. We wake up early in the morning and say, “Assalam-o-Alaikum, Pakistan!” We wake up the entire country. We want to entertain you, make you happy, and make your mornings truly amazing and mesmerizing.

The guest speakers shared their professional experiences and observations with the students.

In the second part of the programme, a detailed and engaging question-and-answer session was organized for the students.

Student: You often talk about freedom of speech, but do you also have as much freedom of speech as your channel owners allow you?

Guest Speaker: No. Look, as I said earlier, freedom comes with responsibility. Frankly speaking, many media owners today are compromised. We should not lie about this.

They have certain limitations and compulsions. Keep in mind that running a television channel is not their only business. They may have twenty, thirty, or forty other businesses that they also need to operate. They have to survive as well.

Pressure can come from anywhere. If you broadcast something against a religious group, its members may come out in protest. If you run a report against a political party, they may stop giving you advertisements. You could end up struggling financially.

Therefore, you have to maintain a balance.

Students asked the anchors several questions about managing pressure during live broadcasts, the difference between sensational journalism and responsible journalism, and the potential of modern media platforms such as podcasting.

The research team from the Department of Management Sciences at Lahore Garrison University organized an important policy dialogue under the LGU Research Innovation Fund to address the smog crisis in Lahore.

The event, titled From Smog Alerts to Action: Towards Cleaner Air Through Coordinated Collective Response, aimed to develop practical and sustainable strategies to tackle smog through cooperation among different departments and institutions.

Guest Speaker: The most important work in air quality that we are proud to present to the university and our colleagues is the EPIC grant we received. We now have an air-quality monitoring system in 28 cities of Pakistan.

Guest Speaker: The phenomenon of smog started in 2015. Now, we are experiencing its fifth season in Pakistan.

When it comes to stakeholders, we work very closely with farming communities. We have trained more than 300,000 members of farming communities in agricultural practices across South Punjab and the areas around Lahore.

These were the areas where the issue of crop-stubble burning was particularly serious. Therefore, we introduced alternative practices to the farmers.

Several senior officials from key institutions across the city participated in the discussion. These included secretaries, directors, additional directors, general managers, urban managers, deputy executive officers, deputy directors, and project officers.

Representatives from important organizations and departments participated actively in the event. These included the Environmental Protection Agency Punjab, Punjab Safe Cities Authority, Punjab Transport Authority, the relevant air-quality monitoring units, WWF, the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the Planning and Development Board, the Agriculture Department, Local Government and Community Development, IDAP, and the School Education Department.

The policy dialogue was moderated by Dr. Shabana Naveed, who led discussions on administrative gaps and coordinated efforts to combat smog.

Participant: Academia is also playing a role in this area. Different universities are making efforts to monitor the Air Quality Index, or AQI.

Can we bring these efforts together through collaboration? Are the monitoring stations already connected in a way that allows us to combine their data? Some data is available, but can we bring everything together?

The Vice Chancellor of Lahore Garrison University, in his concluding remarks, reaffirmed the university's commitment to playing an active role in research-based policymaking, institutional cooperation, and practical initiatives for creating a cleaner and healthier environment.

Vice Chancellor: Our country has institutions that are doing important work. So, never underestimate them, and never fall into the kind of media narrative that portrays this country as if it is not functioning or nothing is being accomplished here.

That is not true. We are the ones who have to run this country. Everybody is doing their best, and we are trying to find ways to make things even better.

As long as our institutions exist and continue working, the country will continue to function. Therefore, value these institutions and cooperate with them. As mentioned earlier, use their dashboards and seek their assistance. These resources are there for your benefit.
