The Department of Management Sciences at Lahore Garrison University (LGU) organized a policy dialogue titled “From Smog Alerts to Action: Towards Cleaner Air through Coordinated Collective Response” under the LU Research Innovation Fund. The dialogue focused on developing collaborative strategies to address Lahore’s air pollution challenges and promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
The event brought together senior officials and representatives from key institutions, including the Environmental Protection Agency Punjab, the Urban Unit, WWF, Punjab Safe Cities Authority, Punjab Transport Authority, Parks and Horticulture Authority, and several government departments. Moderated by Dr. Shabana Nadeem, the discussion highlighted governance gaps, institutional coordination, and the importance of evidence-based policies to combat smog.
Participants also emphasized the role of universities and research institutions in air quality monitoring and data sharing. Discussions explored the possibility of bringing together air quality monitoring stations and their data to improve coordination and support informed decision-making. The importance of working with farming communities to reduce crop stubble burning was also highlighted, alongside efforts to promote alternative agricultural practices.
The dialogue provided a platform for stakeholders to share practical recommendations and strengthen cooperation between government institutions, academia, environmental organizations, and local communities. Speakers highlighted ongoing air quality monitoring initiatives across Pakistani cities and stressed the need to turn smog alerts into practical, coordinated action.
The event concluded with remarks by the Vice Chancellor of Lahore Garrison University, who emphasized the importance of trusting, valuing, and cooperating with public institutions. He encouraged participants to use available resources and institutional dashboards to support collective efforts. He also reaffirmed LGU’s commitment to research-led policymaking, institutional collaboration, and sustainable solutions for cleaner air and a healthier future.
